FACULTY PROFILE
Leander Kandilige is a Professor of Migration and Development at the Centre for Migration Studies, University of Ghana. He obtained his DPhil. (PhD.) in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and an MSt. in Forced Migration also from the University of Oxford. He also holds a PGCert. in Managing Voluntary Organisations from the University of Southampton. In addition, he holds an MA in International Affairs and a BA in Political Science with Philosophy from the University of Ghana.
His areas of academic research interest include migration policy formulation; migration and development; labour mobility and regional integration; labour migrations in Africa; return migration and reintegration; and theories of migration. His research focuses on return and reintegration, labour migration, migration and development, migration policy development, diaspora communities, and theories of migration.
He has been a Principal Investigator, Co-Investigator and Researcher for several large projects funded by diverse international organisations, including the AU, ILO, OECD, IOM, ICMPD, UKRI/GCRF, GIZ, EU and ECOWAS. He has successfully executed several research projects funded by international funders, including the EU, AU, ECOWAS, IOM, ILO/OECD, UKRI, DFID, GIZ, and ICMPD.
Among others, Prof. Kandilige supported the drafting of continental guidelines for the African Union to support Member States in regulating migrant returns, readmission, and sustainable reintegration in Africa. These are complemented with a sample rights-based and migrant-centred return agreement, a standard operating procedure on sustainable reintegration and a sample terms of reference for a national coordination mechanism. He was also part of the consulting team that drafted the Diaspora Engagement Policy for Ghana. In addition, Prof. Kandilige drafted a Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures for Private Employment Agencies in Ghana to regulate the recruitment of labour migrants for placement abroad as well as in Ghana.
Prof. Kandilige is a member of the Steering Committee of the International Panel on Migration and the Vice President for the Africa region. He is also an Associate Editor of the International Migration Review journal as well as that of the Comparative Migration Studies journal. In addition, he serves on the Editorial Boards of the Refugee Survey Quarterly journal published by the Oxford University Press and the African Migration Journal. He is also a Board member of the RCRC Global Migration Lab.
